"I never thought I'd want to get screwed by a mechanic ..."

After a seedy auto repair shop over-charged the wrong customer, Miami 8 News secretly dispatches intern Liam Byrne to investigate. His assignment? To get ripped off by the crooked crew at Scud's Auto, and catch it all on camera.

There's only one problem hunky mechanic Paul Parisi keeps getting in the way. And even though the tall, muscular stud in the oil-stained jumpsuit swears he's straight, Liam's convinced they have a spark.

With a promotion on the line, can Liam resist Paul's flirting and obtain the footage he needs? Can he keep his cover, or will Paul learn the truth?

"Thanks to my past, I'm stuck here."

For a guy who stands behind quality service, cutting corners is causing all sorts of stressors in Paul's life -- like an embarrassing failure to ignite with women.

But when Paul takes a private test drive with a handsome customer, and talks revolve around pistons? Paul's engine doesn't just fire right up ... he throws a rod. And he's pretty sure Liam saw it, too.

If anyone at the shop found out what they were up to, Paul knows he'd be out of a job. But Liam won't take his car elsewhere -- it's almost like the guy wants to get ripped off. What's his deal, anyway?

Screwed is a 45,000 word first time gay romance! A light-hearted novel featuring a jacked and bi-curious mechanic, a terrible disguise, two men playing doctor, sex on Miami Beach, and more! No cliffhanger, no cheating, but the HEA is guaranteed.

Liam Byrne has been an unpaid intern at the Miami 8 News affiliate looking for opportunities to become employed. His boss has an idea for a story that could make that happen. Thing is…he meets Paul and Liam’s undercover scoop looks out-of-reach. There’s chemistry but at what cost to Liam’s career and Paul’s job?! There is additional intrigue involving Paul’s uncle. The reader will be soooo happy to see what happens to him. Anyway, LOVED this book. Van Barrett is a great writer, no confusion as to what’s happening, nor who is talking. Highly recommended if you like M/M romance and lust. Several really good scenes…wink.

Screwed First Time Gay edition by Van Barrett Romance eBooks Reviews

This was a cute sexy story with a serious note to it. Liam is an unpaid internist at a news station and has been for two years. Desperate to get a paid position, he grabs at the chance to go on an undercover operation. He's supposed to expose a garage for fraud to the public. Paul works at his Uncle Carl's garage. It used to be his dad's before he died. Unable to get a job anywhere else, he tries to keep his uncle under control and from doing too much damage to people's pocketbooks. Liam can't take a hint to go to some other garage and Paul is doing his best to save Liam some money. A lab coat, big glasses, discovering one's sexuality, and some little blue pills bring humor to this story with a very satisfying ending. Excellent read that anyone would enjoy. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.
This book was very simple. Paul's simple acceptance of who he is, simple resolution, simple epilogue that was basically a recap of lots of elapsed time... But while everything was very simple, it was also just right. It didn't need a ton of complications to be a sweet first time gay story. It didn't need a big misunderstanding or dick moves (the unsexy kind) or revenge drama stuff, it just needed to be what it was.

Paul was so sweetly clueless it made me want to read Shiny! by Amy Lane again. Paul and Will have some similarities like thinking they're only good at one thing, aren't aware of their own sexuality, and fully embracing themselves once they know who they are...oh, and both are hung too =]. Anyway, Paul is a good boy and because of his honesty, persistence, and affection for Liam, he'll probably grow into a great man.

Liam struggles with his past, his job, and his attraction to Paul. He wants so much and works so hard and finally has his opportunity to make it all worth it. And then came Paul. If it was only his looks, but no, he had to be honest and earnest too. How was Liam supposed to resist? Well it's a good thing he didn't because they were each strong where the other was weak except for their feelings for each other.

Overall I truly enjoyed reading this. It was hot, tender, mildly frustrating, and then triumphant. I do wish the epilogue didn't read like a summary, especially because said summary interrupted a sexy moment with flashbacks. It was all good information, just the format was lacking so it wasn't as great as it could have been. Other than that, it was cute with good guys winning and sexy times were on the beach, folding chairs, creeper seats, under cars... You get the idea.

Happily read and reviewed this ARC from Hidden Gems.
3.5 Stars

Screwed was an entertaining story about two men on different career paths that happened to cross when one was possibly scamming others at a car repair shop, and the other one was on his first investigative reporting job after a 2-year internship. We meet Liam, the intern, who has a one-in-a-lifetime chance at getting into the bigger leagues of investigative reporting when he is assigned to scope out a car repair shop after one of the head honchos of his place of employment felt his wife was scammed after she took her car in for repairs at Scud's Auto. Liam has been assigned to pose as a doctor taking in his car to report unknown problems to see what kind of repairs it would supposedly need.

Paul Parisi is pretty much the only honest mechanic at an auto shop that used to belong to his father who passed away. It now belongs to his crooked uncle, but Paul feels stuck working there after something happened in his past that labeled him a felon which made trying to get other jobs difficult. Paul's dad taught him everything he knew about cars. His dad's auto shop used to have a great reputation, and everyone brought their cars to the shop knowing they'd get honest repairs done at a decent price. But now with his uncle ruling, things have spiraled downhill fast as he tries to scam everyone out of money for unnecessary repairs. Paul is the mechanic called to help when Liam brings in his car with the unknown problems.

Liam is a hard-working, proud gay man that is immediately attracted to Paul once he sees him. But he has to keep reminding himself that he's there for a job, an investigation, and Paul could be in on the whole scam. Another thing that keeps Liam at bay is the fact that Paul comes across as being a straight man.

One thing leads to another, and the next thing you know, these two can't help but realize the sizzling chemistry between the two of them. Paul was finding he couldn't seem to hit it off with any woman, and he began to think he had some kind of physical and mental problem. But encountering Liam and the immediate attraction he feels, yet is embarrassed and ashamed about, he knows he doesn't have a physical problem.

There were some intense, steamy interaction going on between Liam and Paul, passion that just couldn't be denied. But the inner turmoil that Liam faced with really wanting Paul to be innocent in the grand scheme of things, and his intuition that knew that Paul couldn't be involved, could prove to be detrimental to Liam's career. You really feel for Paul, because he's doing his best to be honest in a no-win situation. His uncle took complete advantage of him after his father passed away, and made a reputable business into a complete sham.

You can't help but route for these two that they are able to find happiness together and in their careers. And you definitely hoped that Paul's sorry excuse for an uncle gets caught for all the damages and misery he's caused. Screwed was a quick, entertaining read that had you hoping for a positive outcome.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I really enjoyed this book. Good light hearted story, some sad old history but in the end a happy ever after.
This has laughs and heat with a fun storyline that keeps you wanting more. Liam and Paul have some smoking hot chemistry and I loved their characters. Uncle Carl was a douche. I like that Paul was trying to do the right thing in spite of the situation he was in. I loved the shenanigans Liam and Paul got into. Lol. This is a new to me author I enjoyed very much and plan to continue to follow.
